  1. In John 6:1–5, what details show that Jesus was aware of the crowd’s situation and needs? What question does he ask, and why might he ask it?
  2. Looking at verses 5–9, what resources were actually available to the disciples, and how did they initially respond to the problem?
  3. In verses 10–15, how much does Jesus give to the people and how much is leftover? What might be the significance of the leftover food?

Theological Reflection

  1. How do we see Jesus’ character revealed in this passage, especially his kindness, power, and awareness of human needs?
  2. Why do you think Jesus chose to work through a small offering (five loaves and two fish) instead of creating food from nothing in front of everyone? What might that reveal about how God often works?
  3. After the miracle, the crowd wanted to make Jesus king by force. What does their reaction tell us about their expectations of the Messiah versus Jesus’ actual mission?
